FLEA PIT

INTERACTIVE SCUPLTURE

Meet and play with the disturbingly comforting creatures of Te Waa’s “Fleapit” inspired by Basement’s queer past, present and future.

Peppered throughout the festival garden you will find a series of playful, interactive sculptures by Tyrone Te Waa.

Tyrone says of the work,

“Fleapit” is a site specific response to  ‘The Theatre’ as a place where dramatic performances happen mixed in with the building’s past life as a gay night club in the 70s. I imagined the night club as a haven for colourful peoples, much like how it functions today. For this show I will reimagine and assemble characters to greet and mingle with our guests.”

ARTIST

Tyrone Te Waa (Tūwharetoa) is an artist living and working in Tāmaki Makaurau. He uses methods of assembling, wrapping, binding, stitching, linking, covering, concealing, knotting, tangling and fastening. The processes and materials he uses have dual roles -- both a reference to shelter and stability, and more bodily connections such as bone and skin.
